Important Parent Notification of Disturbing Online Trend

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I am reaching out to alert you to an online viral social media trend on TikTok and Snapchat called “The Cat in the Hat.”  This trend involves a perpetrator sending private messages that include AI-generated images of a sinister version of the Dr. Seuss character, The Cat in the Hat, along with other disturbing images and/or messages.  These perpetrators prey upon children or adults who do not have adequate privacy settings on their devices.  The messages often feature pictures from the receiver’s own social media accounts of themselves and/or their friends due to poor privacy settings.

Unfortunately, a student reported to school administrators today that they had received such a message.  The message included a threat and images.  Upon receipt of this information, administrators contacted the Cameron Schools Police Department who in turn, immediately notified the Cameron Police Department.  The parents of all identified students were promptly contacted and referred to the Cameron Police Department, which has the appropriate resources and jurisdiction to track and potentially charge the sender of the threatening messages.

The Cameron R-1 School District takes all threats such as this seriously and encourages parents to do the same.  If you allow your child to access TikTok or Snapchat, please sit down with them this evening and visit with them about this online trend, the importance of telling someone if they are ever contacted by a stranger online or sent an inappropriate message, and how to manage privacy settings to protect themselves from those who prey on the innocent.

If you do detect an online threat or inappropriate message on your child’s phone, please immediately contact the Cameron Police Department or your local Sheriff’s office to file a report.  Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and for partnering with us and local law enforcement to keep our children safe.
